New standard products EMIM OPr, Chol OAc and Chol Lys

proionic has further broadened its webshop by
-    EMIM propionate
-    Cholinium acetate
-    Cholinium L lysinate

They are available on stock in quantities from 1 kg and 10 kg. If you are interested in lower quantities, please check out our biomass dissolution kit, including 6 different ionic liquids with varied dissolution power and selectivity to (bio-)polymers.

Based on our Carbonate Based Ionic Liquid Synthesis process (CBILS®, a registered trademark of proionic GmbH), we offer EMIM propionate (EMIM-OPr) in high quality (≥ 98%). EMIM propionate is liquid at room temperature. This ionic liquid is stable against hydrolysis and highly soluble in DMSO. EMIM propionate is a further prominent example with coordinating properties for the dissolution and processing of biomass. [1, 2]
Additionally, we offer Cholinium acetate and Cholinium L lysinate in technical quality (≥ 95%) with low halide content. Cholinium acetate is solid at room temperature, slightly soluble in DMSO and highly soluble in water. Cholinium L lysinate is liquid at room temperature and highly soluble in water and DMSO. Both Choline based ionic liquids stand out due to their high biodegradability, low toxicity, and high enzyme stability. [3]

proionic successfully finished the SFG founded project “Desulfurization of pyrolysis oil using ionic liquids” (DesPyröl)
The desulfurization of oils and fuels is still an ongoing topic. [1, 2] The formation of sulfur oxides during combustion is one major source of acid rain and air pollution. Regarding environmental protection, human health protection, and climate change, the use of S containing oils and fuels needs to be critically considered. Quite recently, the IMO (International Maritime Organization) limited the sulfur content of fuel oil used on board ships operating outside designated emission control areas to 0.50% m/m (mass by mass). [3] Although these thresholds so far are only applied within the shipping industry, it can be assumed that these guidelines will soon also apply to other fuels.

There are different methods to remove S containing compounds from oils and fuels. Among them, the extractive desulfurization with an ionic liquid is a desirable method, which may be performed under mild and simple conditions (low temperature, low pressure). Due to their design, ionic liquids offer the possibility to extract both, small S containing compounds (e.g. thiols, thioethers, disulfides) and bigger, heterocyclic compounds (e.g. thiophenes, benzothiophenes and derivatives). [1]

Within this project, we focused on imidazolium based ionic liquids with different types of anions including coordinating (O, N, S) or Lewis acidic (FeCl4-) anions. The pure ionic liquids as well as combinations with different additives (e.g. Ferrocene, Magnetite, Tween20, Zinc undecylenate) were tested as extractant for a model tire pyrolysis oil (TPO). To reach the required sulfur level (< 0.5 wt%), several extraction cycles were necessary applying the optimized and best performing ionic liquid. The good quality of the desulfurized pyrolysis oil was approved by a Swedish special oil and fuel testing laboratory (Rhodsig Laboratory AG) performing a full profile analysis of proionic’s desulphurized TPO. Additives and ultrasonic treatment were tested to improve the desulphurization process in addition. Basic attempts to recycle the ionic liquid were successfully performed.

We thank the SFG for financial support. Project number 1 000 060 086.

Custom Chemical Manufacturing, Process Development and Scale-up Support
In addition to ionic liquids, proionic offers chemical process development and scale up support as a separate service. Processes will be developed, optimized, and prepared for commercially viable production of your chemical compound.
Latest customer testimonial about proionic's custom chemical manufacturing service
Conor Wilson, Development Manager, Lixea:
“We chose proionic based on their expertise in the manufacture of ionic liquids and comfort with what many other manufacturers would consider a complicated chemical to work with. The process was extremely smooth and the proionic team was extremely helpful in dealing with upstream supply chain issues that arose. We would have liked to have been on site for the production run, but due to travel restrictions were not able to. Even with that issue, the proionic team was very communicative throughout the manufacture to ensure that the chemical was produced to our needs. The final product was delivered exactly to specification.”
