proionic supports the development of biodegradable replacement of plastic microbeads

proionic Gmbh participated in a funding round in Naturbeads Ltd together with Progress Tech Transfer® and Eos Advisory.
Naturbeads has developed a very unique and innovative technology which allows the substitution of plastic microbeads with biodegradable cellulose-based products in a variety of applications.
Naturbeads was incorporated by the initiative of an international team including an Italian entrepreneur, Dr Giovanna Laudisio and an Italian academic, Prof Davide Mattia, together with Prof Janet Scott. With the funds raised, Naturbeads will finance the scale-up of this technology from pilot to demo plant scale and will expand the range of applications of its platform technology. In addition to cosmetics, paints, coatings, additives for the oil and gas industry, packaging and composites, Naturbeads, through its Italian subsidiary Naturbeads Italia will start to explore the application of its cellulose beads to the tyre industry to make it more sustainable and decrease its contribution to microplastic pollution.

GALACTICA - project completion

The Galactica project in collaboration with RBX Creations to develop a sustainable process to produce dissolving pulp from hemp and/or flax feedstock was successfully completed.
The extensive research was fruitful. The obtained cellulose pulp was well suited for the fibre spinning at DITF. Both the pre-processing of the raw material and the dissolution of the obtained dissolving pulp for the fibre spinning was possible due to the utilization of ionic liquids. On top of that, both technologies were developed to make the production of fabrics greener, in the sense that the ionic liquid used is recyclable and reusable in both processes.
Anne & Charles Reboux, RBX:
“As we have been working since 2018 on hemp cellulose through the Iroony® project, we are happy to keep moving forward. The EU Galactica project in collaboration with proionic for expertise on ionic liquids and DITF Denkendorf for HighPerCell® spinning technology, resulted in these new filaments and knit fabric prototypes showing textile materials can be both innovative and sustainable.”

Marcell Gyurkač, Scientist R&D:
“I am very proud of working with Anne and Charles from RBX Creations together on this highly sustainable and green project. The effort we put into the work really paid off at the end. It is a satisfying feeling to hold the fibre in my hand. We started with raw hemp, and we are super close to wearing clothes."
