Coordinating ionic liquid solvents for a greener dissolution and processing of biomass

Ionic liquids are greener alternatives to volatile, environmentally undesirable organic solvents. They allow an uncomplicated and safe handling compared to conventional solvents and dissolve a wide range of biopolymers. Ionic liquid solvents exhibit excellent chemical & thermal stability & non-flammability and can easily be recycled and reused allowing selective to complete dissolution of biological macromolecules under mild conditions. Furthermore, chemical modifications of macromolecules can easily be conducted in suitable IL solution. The ability of ILs to directly dissolve cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose, chitin, silk fibroin, wool keratin, etc., demonstrates the great potential and broad application range of Ionic liquids.
proionic offers various products exhibiting varied dissolution power and selectivity to biopolymers.

Do you have a potential application in mind, but no idea which ionic liquid is best suited for it? We have the solution! We have put together six of the most promising ILs for the dissolution of biomass in our (proionic biomass dissolution kit) at an unbeatable price:

EURO 550.- excl. VAT and transport for 6x 100g:
Cholinium-L-lysinat (Chol-Lys) (biobased)
Cholinium acetate (Chol-OAc) (biobased)

1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIM-OAc)
1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium octanoate (EMIM-OOc)
1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (BMIM-OAc)
1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium propionate (EMIM-OPr)

Recently, proionic has registered EMIM OOc according to REACH regulations and is able to provide its customers with sufficient quantities to run pilot scale trials. In addition, OEKO Tex certificates for EMIM-OOc and EMIM-OAc are available.
Dr. Markus Damm (Head of R&D):
“In recent years, we have worked with our partners/customers to acquire in-depth knowledge in the field of biomass dissolution with ionic liquids and the recycling of the ionic liquids used in diverse processes. Besides EMIM OAc, EMIM OOc has emerged as gold standard for the dissolution of cellulose due to the high quality of the generated cellulosic products. Interestingly, EMIM OPr has a very high dissolution capacity of chitin/chitosan. This is why it is so exciting to test different combinations of biopolymers and ionic liquids.”

Paper Production from HIPE-REC® Cellulose and New FFG Project
The first demo sample of proionic´s HIPE-REC® technology is available. Paper sheets were produced at Graz University of Technology – Institute of Bioproducts and Paper Technology (BPTI). Different levels of pulp refining were realized utilizing bleached and non-bleached HIPE REC® cellulose pulp. The most relevant paper parameters were measured including dry mass, viscosity, lignin content, tensile breaking strength and tearing length, showing good performance even for the non-bleached cellulose pulp.

Furthermore, proionic is glad to announce the start of a joint research project supported by the Austrian research promotion agency (FFG) together with the BPTI as consortium leader. Together with BPTI and ecolyte GmbH the aim of the project is to develop cellulose-based membranes and generate in-depth knowledge regarding the exact working principle of these membranes.

Dr. Roland Kalb (founder proionic):
"The collaboration with the BPTI is exciting for us, our discussions always create promising new ideas and inspires both sides a lot. I am convinced that ILs can be gamechangers in paper production processes. Even our preliminary experiments already result in useful and functional products. I am very excited to deepen our knowledge in terms of what roles ionic liquids can play in paper production processes in the PapIon project."

Prof. Ulrich Hirn (Head of BPTI):
“The PapIon project aims to harness a new technological approach for membranes for use in flow batteries and fuel cells for commercial application. Previous work has shown that such membranes are obtained by treating paper with ionic liquids. Ionic liquids are in gerneral very interesting solvents, particularly for cellulose. We are looking forward to the collaboration with proionic in this FFG project.”
